The history of Ang thong

The Royal Forest Department and the National Parks Division first established the Ang Thong Marine Park in 1980. A number of studies revealed the area’s ecological significance and the need to protect its distinctive marine environment, leading to the decision to create the park.

The park’s name, “Ang Thong,” means “golden bassin” in Thai, and it is said to have been given the name because of the sparkling golden sands on the beaches of some of the islands. The park covers an area of over 102 square kilometers, including both land and sea.

While the beach scenes from the movie were filmed on the Phi Phi Islands in Krabi Province, some of the film sequences were filmed on the Ang Thong Islands.

Only a small number of animal species have been officially recorded in the park, with only 16 mammal species, 50 bird species, 14 reptile species, and 5 amphibian species having been spotted on the islands. However, it is highly likely that the vast majority of the amphibian and reptile species recorded on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan can also be found in the park. The islands are home to many different kinds of mammals, including leopard cats, fisher cats, wild boar, and smooth-coated otters, as well as more common ones like dusky leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques. Collared kingfishers, white-bellied sea eagles, brahminy kites, black bazas, oriental pied hornbills, Eurasian woodcocks, Pacific reef herons, and common hill mynas are some of the bird species that may be seen here.
