THAILAND NATIONAL PARK

Ultimate Guide to Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine National Park

The history of Ang thong

The Royal Forest Department and the National Parks Division first established the Ang Thong Marine Park in 1980. A number of studies revealed the area’s ecological significance and the need to protect its distinctive marine environment, leading to the decision to create the park.

The park’s name, « Ang Thong, » means « golden bassin » in Thai, and it is said to have been given the name because of the sparkling golden sands on the beaches of some of the islands. The park covers an area of over 102 square kilometers, including both land and sea.

The Development of the park

The development of the Ang Thong Marine Park was a gradual process. Initially, the park was only open to researchers and environmentalists, but as time passed, it began to open up to the public. In the early days, there were no facilities for visitors, and access to the islands was limited.

However, as the popularity of the park grew, so did the development of facilities and services. In the 1990s, basic accommodations such as bungalows and camping sites were built on some of the islands. This allowed more visitors to experience the park’s natural beauty.

Inspired by the novel « The Beach » by Alex Garland, Ang Thong became one of the prime backpacker destinations in Thailand when the subsequent movie starring Leonardo Di Caprio came out in 2000. While the beach scenes from the movie were filmed on the Phi Phi Islands in Krabi Province, some of the film sequences were filmed on the Ang Thong Islands.
